How to Connect a Canon Camera to Your Photo Booth
A Canon EOS R body with a fast lens gives the photo station a look a phone cannot fake. BoothLab drives it over a single USB cable — no laptop, no capture software in between.
Quick answer: Set the Canon to a photo mode with JPEG quality, turn Airplane mode on, set Choose USB connection app to Photo Import/Remote Control, connect it to the iPhone or iPad with a USB cable, and open Photobooth → Settings → External camera. When a Canon is worth it
- Classic booth portraits: an f/1.8 prime gives background separation no phone fully replicates.

- Print work: shooting strips that will be printed? Canon files hold up at print resolution.
Connected cameras shoot stills only. The Canon belongs at the stationary photo station, where you can frame, focus and light a portrait properly.
Connect it to BoothLab
- On the camera, set the mode dial to a photo mode (not movie), and set image quality to a JPEG setting. RAW-only capture is not supported; RAW+JPEG works, because BoothLab takes the JPEG, but JPEG alone transfers fastest.
- Set Airplane mode to On under Wireless settings — the tab is named Wireless settings or Wireless features depending on the body, and Communication functions on the R1, R3, R5 Mark II, R6 Mark II, R6 Mark III and R50 V. Canon bodies disable the USB port while Wi-Fi is active, so this step is not optional.
- On bodies that have it — every EOS R except the R, RP, R5, R6 and R100 — set Choose USB connection app to Photo Import/Remote Control. Do not pick Canon app(s) for iPhone — despite the name, that option is reserved for Canon's Camera Connect app and BoothLab will not see the camera.
- Connect the camera to the iPhone or iPad: USB-C to USB-C, or Apple's Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter on Lightning devices.
- In BoothLab, open Photobooth → Settings → External camera; the body appears under Connected cameras.
- Frame, focus and set exposure on the camera — treat it like a portrait session, not a snapshot.
- Captured photos flow into BoothLab's gallery, where your strip templates, overlays and QR sharing apply exactly as they do to phone captures.

Booth-friendly camera settings
- Manual exposure, locked before doors open — consistent frames make every strip look uniform.
- Shutter 1/125s or faster to freeze group poses; let ISO float before dropping shutter speed.
- A 24–35mm (full-frame) field of view fits groups of four at typical backdrop distances.
- Turn off auto power-off under Function settings → Power saving → Auto power off — the tab is labelled Set-up on some bodies — and set Eco mode in the same tab to Off. A body that sleeps mid-event drops the connection.
- Keep a memory card in the camera and close Canon Camera Connect or any other remote app.
- Continuous power: a Canon DC coupler or USB power adapter outlasts any event; charged spares otherwise.
